Forest School - The Gruffalo

The woods is a great setting for a story and today we listened to an old favourite, The Gruffalo.  After listening to the story we set about building houses for the different characters.  The children were very inventive using leaves as beds, and moss as decorations!

Fireworks

Class 1 have loved their firework theme this week.  We have been using the bright pastels to create our own firework pictures.  We have been developing our fine motor skills by making some sparklers.  The children have thought of some fantastic words and phrases to describe the fireworks.  I particularly loved "glittery worms", "they look like sparkly baby anacondas" and "raindrops that glitter".

We had a Bonfire Night themed Forest School session too where we toasted marshmallows and talked about what the fire looked like.  We learnt about how to safely kneel on one knee to toast our marshmallows and were very careful.

Take a look at a snippet of our firework song.  It is a great song to practise our whole body movements.

Firewise Visit

Class 1 had a visit from Rose from the Dorset Firewise team.  We learnt a lot about how to stay safe in the home and what to do if there ever was a fire.  We really loved being able to dress up as a fireman and use the Poddely as a fire engine!

Forest School - Hedgehogs

In Forest School today we listened to an old Native American tale about hedgehogs who learnt that working together was better even if there was a few 'prickles' or arguments.  After talking about this we got creative with the clay and made our own hedgehogs.  The children found all sorts in the woods to use for prickles, eyes and legs.

Mark Making Workshop

We were lucky to have Jo from Oops Wow Art workshops, come in and do a mark making workshop with us.  It is important to have opportunities to use our whole bodies in activities like this.  For writing we need strong arms and shoulders.  This workshop gave us the perfect opportunity to use our felt tips and crayons with big arm movements.  The children loved making their marks to the music.

Visit to Denhay Farm

This afternoon Class 1 visited Denhay Farm.  We saw baby calves who were just a few days old.  We saw cows being milked and learnt all about what they should eat.  We enjoyed a walk through the fields spotting trees and other wildlife on the farm.

Forest School - Exploring the Woods

Today we visited the woods for the first time.  We had a great time exploring this new environment and found lots of interesting things.  There were leaves that were all sorts of colours and shapes, sticks that reminded us of dinosaurs, animals and even our letter sounds!  We found prickly shells, seeds and feathers too.  We also enjoyed balancing on the logs and pretending it was a train!

                     All aboard the train!

 Forest School -conker art!

After discovering so many conkers on our Autumn walk last week, we returned for some more conker collecting this week.  We had a huge pile and took lots of estimates as to how many there were.  We collected 314 conkers!  We then got creative and worked in groups and on our own to create out own conker pictures.  Some fantastic conker art!

Forest School

This week Class 1 enjoyed their first Forest School session.  We walked to Simene Field, where we went on a hunt for interesting items.  The children found all sorts of natural items they found interesting and were able to talk about and describe these.  We found conkers, conker shells, bark, leaves and twigs.  Have a look at some of the things we collected in the tray in the classroom.

Our First Week!

We are so proud of how well the children have settled into their new class.  They have had lots of time to get to know new friends this week.  Here are a few pictures of just a small selection of the things they have been upto!
