Symondsbury CE VA Primary School Climate Action Plan: 2024-27

What is a Climate Action Plan?

In April 2022, the Department for Education released a sustainability and climate change strategy specifically for education. By 2025, all education settings are expected to appoint a sustainability lead and develop a climate action plan. This plan will guide schools in both implementing and educating about various sustainability initiatives.

Our climate action plan has been created collaboratively by the headteacher, school staff, school governors and, of course, our pupils.

At Symondsbury CE VA Primary School, we are committed to fostering a deep understanding of climate change and sustainability among our pupils. Our climate education plan is designed to integrate environmental awareness into our curriculum, encouraging children to become proactive stewards of the planet.

Curriculum Integration

Our curriculum is structured to provide a broad range of experiences that help pupils appreciate their locality and understand their relationship to the wider world. We emphasize the importance of environmental education through various subjects, including Science, Geography, and PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education). This holistic approach ensures that our children not only gain academic knowledge but also develop a strong sense of responsibility towards the environment.

Harmony Project Curriculum

We are proud to weave the principles of the Harmony project into our curriculum. This innovative approach focuses on understanding the interconnectedness of all life and the importance of living in harmony with nature. Here are some examples of how we integrate the Harmony project into our teaching:

  • Nature-Based Learning: Our children engage in outdoor learning activities that help them connect with nature and understand ecological systems. This includes activities like gardening, wildlife observation, and nature walks.
  • Sustainable Practices: We teach our pupils about sustainable practices such as recycling, composting, and energy conservation. These lessons are reinforced through hands-on projects and school-wide initiatives.
  • Creative Projects: Through art and design, children explore themes of sustainability and environmental stewardship. They create projects using recycled materials and learn about the impact of waste on the environment.
  • Community Involvement: We encourage our children to participate in local environmental projects and initiatives. This helps them understand the importance of community action in addressing climate change.

100 Ways to Change the World

As part of our climate education initiative, we have introduced the "100 Ways to Change the World" and WE DAY. These encourage children to engage in practical activities that contribute to sustainability. From reducing waste and conserving energy to participating in local environmental projects, our pupils learn that small actions can lead to significant positive changes.

Sustainable Development Goals

Our climate education plan is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We focus on goals such as Quality Education (Goal 4), Climate Action (Goal 13), and Life on Land (Goal 15). By linking our curriculum to these global objectives, we aim to provide our children with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities in achieving a sustainable future.

Positive Impact

We believe that every child has the potential to make a difference. Our climate education plan is designed to inspire and empower our pupils to take meaningful actions that contribute to a healthier planet. Through hands-on learning and community involvement, we strive to cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious individuals who are equipped to tackle the challenges of climate change.
